Best Robotics Toys for Girls

By Ravel

Robots are great interactive toys for learning science. Unfortunately, most robotic toys are made by boys for boys- hence all the dinosaurs, bugs, and man-bots. This is why it’s so important for girls to get in on the robot game. Robotic toys need to be designed with girls in mind- to get little girls excited about learning science, engineering, and math. Here are two of my favorite robots that are totally cute, fun, and educational for girls. Not only will you get oodles of playtime out them, it’s a great way to teach science for girls. Get them excited with a cool toy now and next thing you know, you'll be talking servo motors, microcontrollers, and sensors in no time. Pictures and descriptions are below.

Penbo

If cuteness could kill, you wouldn’t stand a chance against this adorable robot toy penguin. Penbo loves to love and she interacts with you through touch and sound. She speaks in Penguish, which is a combination of cute coos, purrs, and singing noises. Penbo responds to touch; gentle petting makes her coo while tapping her on the head makes her do a cha-cha. Then, just when you think you can’t take the cuteness anymore, Penbo lays an egg and out pops a Bebe! Penbo loves her Bebe and will coo and sing to it; she even rocks it to sleep while singing a lullaby. Bebe itself makes all kinds of baby Penguish coos and squeaks. Penbo and Bebe interact with one another and you can join them in five different games, like peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek.

This little penguin robot is seriously cute, but surprisingly, not in an annoying way. It takes a little bit to learn how to do all of the combinations, but it’s not difficult or frustrating. Penbo has a microphone and touch sensors so she can interact with you through touch and sound. As a safety feature, Penbo knows when she has been picked up and she will stop rotating her legs and will not deposit an egg while being carried. Penbo takes 6 AAA batteries, so be sure to pick up some extras, although I believe the initial set is provided.

This is a hot toy that’s been selling fast, so order soon! From what I’ve seen, Amazon has the best price by far for Penbo, but you do need to be sure to select Amazon as the seller to get the low price and free shipping. (Other sellers are listed first, but have higher prices).

Femisapien

Finally, a female robot to make you proud! Meet Femisapien- an intelligent, graceful, and super cool female robot. She speaks in Emotish; a language of cute and gentle sounds, including giggles and kisses. Need a back-up singer? Femisapien will join you in some “doo-waps.” Need a dance partner? Not only can you teach her new dances, but you can “lead” her in a dance together. Want to feel loved? Femisapien will blow you kisses.

These robot ladies are truly interactive toys. Femisapien interacts with you through sound, touch, and gestures- meaning that there’s no remote control to lose! Just by moving her head and her hands, you can access all kinds of different modes and functions. Part of the fun is figuring out all the things she do. If you’re used to clunky, awkward robot toys, Femisapien is sure to wow you. She has very fluid movements and is much more responsive to stimuli than other robots I’ve seen. Her graceful movements make her a great dancer and when she blows you a kiss, you’ll blow one right back.

Amazon has a pretty good price on Femisapien with their free shipping, but I see the price is increasing for the holidays. Order one now before the price goes up (or before they sell out). She also takes 6 AA batteries, so pick some of those too!
